There was no explosion that created all matter; no Big Bang, no Little Bang, and no Mediocre Bang. There were people sitting around a Gypsy Caravan, mashing their virtual hands upon animated typewriters at speeds of around 6,000 km/h, all very thankful that LL forgot to add the ‘Feeling’ Plug-in, and that’s it.
The somewhat undramatic occurance described above was the very first Milk Wood Writer’s Meet. Now, “What, pray tell, is the Milk Wood Writers’ Meet?”. I hear you ask. Well, I will take this post to explain that to you and also go through the reasons behind it, the happenings in it and the expectations we have of it.
The Writers’ Meet is a place for writers to commit themselves to writing. We all know how hard it can be to find the time to write, so allow us to help you find it. All you have to do is turn up and be ready to exercise your brain and fingers.
Harriet set up the Meet because, as a writer, she can appreciate this terrible inability to find time that is present in all who like to put words down in the shape of a story. The idea behind it all is this: People are more likely to do something if they have encouragement, company and a commitment.
You’ll set yourself monthly goals, and so will all the writers who come, we’ll display them for all to see, and you’ll do your best to reach them. The Meet is a place to keep those goals together, but more importantly it is a time and a place to write.
Helpful, relevant chatter is encouraged. We try not to stray from talk that can help one write (in one way or another), but it inevitably happens sometimes.
Have you considered how useful it could be to have people who know all about writing around you, to ask help of?
What’s in it for you? You mean, apart from the gratification of finally getting that story down onto paper? Well… There will be rewards for those who reach their targets, and even a real, tangible prize for those who achieve the most. These little rewards will be announced at the monthly round-up, where we will see who has achieved what, and also where the writers have the opportunity to share some of the work they have been toiling over!
All we can expect is that everyone does their best to reach their own goals. Sometimes we think we can do too much, sometimes life intrudes and stops us from being able, but as long as this is helping writers write, helping to get that dusty story from your head, then we’re happy.
So, please, join us on Monday and Friday at 2pm SLT, at Milk Wood Market, Scotland Inchcruin, for the Milk Wood Writers’ Meet.
The only requirement is that you want to write, and any hiccups you face along the way can be overcome with the Power of Lo–Err, Milk Wood.
